There are others on the forum with a lot more experience than I have got - in DDs and just in general. AP provides more alpha damage but it has requirements with the angling of the enemy, while HE shells deals guaranteed damage. That doesn't mean their prowess is to be underestimated, they really do shine against broadside cruisers that were surprised or distracted.įor the German, high tier British and IJN 100mm armed destroyers, AP and HE are completely interchangable and depends on the angling of the target. The only case where AP would be useful for the Japanese American and Pan asian destroyers is against battleships or cruisers that have their superstructure saturated, then I would consider AP.įor the Russian and the French destroyers, AP shells are useless against almost all destroyers except khabarovsk. Their AP overpens destroyers too often for them to be reliable, and in the case of the Japanese, even if you score a penetrating hit, the AP damage wouldn't be that much greater than the HE alpha anyway. If you are sailing a 127/130mm armed Japanese, American, low to mid tier British or Pan Asian destroyer, the answer is a hard no on almost all cases.
